Holi – A Festival of Colors, Joy, and Celebration

Just imagine a world that is only black and white—no colors, no brightness, just a dull, lifeless existence. Would such a world bring happiness? This is why Holi, the festival of colors, is so significant—it reminds us of the beauty and joy that colors bring into our lives. Just as we embrace different colors during Holi, we should also welcome the different experiences, emotions, and relationships that make life meaningful.

According To astrology, this year (Vikram Samvat 2081), just like the previous year, there will be some confusion regarding the timing of Holika Dahan. Similar circumstances are forming again. Here is a clear explanation:

Holika Dahan is performed on the full moon day of Phalguna when it coincides with Pradosh Kaal and is free from Bhadra, as stated in Dharma Sindhu:
“Sā Pradoshvyāpinī Bhadraarahitā Grāhyā”,
meaning it should be performed during Pradosh Kaal without Bhadra.

If Bhadra coincides with Pradosh Kaal, then Holika Dahan should be performed on the next day when the full moon extends into Pradosh Kaal. However, if the full moon does not extend into Pradosh Kaal on the next day, then Holika Dahan should be done on the first day itself, after the end of Bhadra. But if Bhadra ends at midnight (Nishitha Kaal) or later, then Holika Dahan should be performed before Nishitha Kaal, even within Bhadra Kaal, avoiding the Bhadra Mukha period. This is because performing Holika Dahan after Nishitha Kaal is prohibited, as per Dharma Sindhu:
“If Pradosh Kaal is not available on the next day, and if Bhadra ends before Nishitha Kaal on the first day, then Holika Dahan should be done after Bhadra ends. However, if Bhadra ends after Nishitha Kaal, then Holika Dahan should be done within Bhadra itself, avoiding the Bhadra Mukha period.”

In Vikram Samvat 2081, Phalguna Purnima falls on March 13, 2025 (Thursday) and extends into Pradosh Kaal only on this day On March 14, 2025, Purnima does not extend into Pradosh Kaal, making March 13 the only suitable date for Holika Dahan. Bhadra will end at 11:31 PM (23:31) on March 13, before midnight (Nishitha Kaal), which begins at 12:37 AM (24:37). Therefore, as per scriptures, Holika Dahan should be performed after 11:31 PM (Bhadra ends) but before 12:37 AM (Nishitha Kaal).

Holi is deeply rooted in Hindu mythology, with the most famous legend being the story of Prahlad and Holika. Prahlad, a devoted follower of Lord Vishnu, was targeted by his father, the demon king Hiranyakashyap, who sought to eliminate him. Hiranyakashyap’s sister, Holika, possessed a magical cloak that protected her from fire. She sat in a burning pyre with Prahlad on her lap, hoping to destroy him. However, due to Prahlad’s unwavering faith in Lord Vishnu, Holika was burned to ashes while Prahlad remained unharmed. This is why Holika Dahan is celebrated the night before Holi—symbolizing the burning away of negativity and the triumph of faith and goodness.

The next day, Rangwali Holi is celebrated with colors, music, dance, and sweets, bringing people together in a spirit of unity and joy.

  • Orange – This color is dear to Surya Dev (the Sun God). Playing Holi with orange brings the blessings of the Sun, symbolizing knowledge and joy. It helps eliminate negativity.
  • Yellow – Associated with Jupiter (Brihaspati), yellow is also a favorite color of Lord Krishna. It represents non-violence, love, and wisdom. For those in the gold and silver business, playing Holi with yellow is considered highly auspicious.
  • Pink – A color of love, pink strengthens Venus (Shukra) in the horoscope. It is recommended for improving marital harmony and relationships.
  • Red – Linked to Mars (Mangal), red signifies strength, fame, and energy. Playing Holi with red promotes good health, but those who get angry easily should avoid using this color.
  • Green – Play Holi with green to receive the blessings of Mercury (Budh). It brings positive energy and is especially beneficial for businessmen, teachers, lawyers, and students.
  • Blue – Blue is the favorite color of Lord Shani (Saturn). According to Vastu, it represents the sky and water, bringing peace and happiness.
  • Purple – Representing Rahu, purple is the color of self-respect. It helps remove inferiority complexes and enhances confidence.

Holi is more than just a festival—it’s a celebration of happiness, love, and vibrant energy. It reminds us to embrace life with joy, cherish relationships, and welcome new beginnings.

So, gather your colors, invite your loved ones, and make Holi 2025 an unforgettable celebration!
